Letter of John Perkins and pass of A.K. Shay [manuscript], 1863 and 1865.

John Perkins, Jr., Richmond, Va., writes to Capt. C. Thompson, Louisiana Guard Artillery, acknowledging Thompson's letter of introduction for Mr. Shay, a member of his company wounded at Cedar Run, who is seeking employment until he can return to active service. A pass, 1863 September 7, headed "General Hospital, Charlottesville," grants a furlough to Private A.K. Shay (Jones Battalion) and is signed by James Lawrence Cabell as surgeon in charge.

John Perkins, cotton planter and lawyer of Somerset Plantation, Ashwood, La., was appointed judge of the Circuit Court for Madison Parish in 1851; served as Democratic representative from Louisiana in the U.S. Congress, 1853-1855; represented Madison Parish in the permanent Confederate Congress at Richmond, Va., 1862-1865; and emigrated to Mexico in 1865 where he worked as a colonization agent.
